Specialist contractor Elliott Thomas is celebrating a 100% safety record at BAA’s new Terminal 5 (T5) at Heathrow – a year after the firm was awarded the contract to oversee fire safety for hot works operations.
The team of eight marshals, supervised by Gerry Law, are on fire watch at T5’s A, B and C locations. Worth over £70k a month, the contract tasks Elliott Thomas with fulfilling safety duties on behalf of Watson Steel Structures.
As well as regular checks on fire safety equipment including extinguishers, the team make sure hot works operatives wear appropriate PTE, and coordinate fire points, signage and emergency procedures or drills.
Fire Safety Supervisor on site, Gerry Law, said, “I’m delighted that we have had no reported incidents or accidents throughout hot works operations at T5 - which I think equates to over 1 million hours on site. It’s both testament to the team and their continued hard work, and also the health and safety training which is second to none.”
Also at T5, Elliott Thomas won a £1.4 million pound contract from main contractor Mace Ltd to carry out waste management work at the new BAA Terminal 5A. Balfour Beatty has also awarded Elliott Thomas a rolling contract to provide a full logistics package for its Track Transit System, involving waste management, materials handling and distribution, fire safety and welfare management.
