Specialist contractor Elliott Thomas has just completed the first phase of testing on BAA’s new Baggage Handling System at Terminal 5 (T5), Heathrow. The £30k contract is the latest in a series of logistics and waste management works successfully undertaken by the firm at the construction site.
London Heathrow’s new T5 will serve around 35 million passengers and comprises a Core Terminal Building connected to two satellites by high-speed links. It’s state-of-the-art and custom built Baggage Handling System comprises around 132 check-in desks with advanced technology that automatically reads, screens and sorts bags to their final location.
To ensure the system will cope with the different types and frequencies of passenger luggage, the brand new facility underwent rigorous testing by a team of around twenty Elliott Thomas personnel.
Starting in June, a series of handling scenarios devised by BAA were carried out by the Elliott Thomas team. Acting out the dual roles of passenger and baggage handler, the tests involved manoeuvring bags (in a variety of shapes and sizes) from check-in to collection carousels – incorporating simultaneous inbound and outbound flight activity.
The logistics contract, awarded via tier one main contractor Vanderlande Industries, was successfully concluded by Elliott Thomas in October. The firm is now tendering to complete Phase Two, worth over £200k, which will see the testing programme increase the number of operatives, mock flight activity and volume of bags. It is anticipated that final phase testing will involve upwards of 600 operatives and over 20,000 bags.
In December, Elliott Thomas won a £1.4 million pound contract from main contractor Mace Ltd to carry out waste management work at the new BAA Terminal 5A. Balfour Beatty has also awarded Elliott Thomas a rolling contract to provide a full logistics package for its Track Transit System, involving waste management, materials handling and distribution, fire safety and welfare management.
