The recent handover of the £1.7m Grade 2 listed St. Cross building within the University of Oxford's law faculty has been a complete success. This lecture theatre project involved working within a live university building with lecture theatres and libraries remaining operational throughout the works.
Major internal structural alterations enabled an existing space to be opened up to allow a replacement 10m square rooflight to be installed over the newly formed lecture theatre. One of the main challenges was to replicate the existing finishes in line with the listed building consent and maintain the look and feel of the existing building.
Part of the project consisted of replacing part of the existing copper roof, which had been leaking for a number of years. A 2,500 sq m temporary scaffold roof was erected over the area to be replaced so that the works could progress with no weather disruptions.
Elliott Thomas Construction completed the project in the agreed timescale, with the Law Faculty being delighted with their new space.
